How can we be set free spiritually if our mind, soul, and spirit are bound? Only Jesus can free us from the chains of Satan, and He is the one who can also deliver us from our own selfish immorality. The cross of Christ shows how God responds to our need for life and freedom. This book primarily addresses legalistic thinking and how it endangers our freedom in Christ. Legalism makes us slaves again; it is dangerous to replace genuine spiritual life with it because it corrupts our personal relationship with Christ. We can prevent this by recognizing such thinking and consciously avoiding it. However, freedom must not be abused. We must not reduce grace to the level of license, which permits sin! A true disciple is responsibly free: free to become like Christ, but not to conform to the world. Three main things hinder our freedom: ignorance, pride, and fear.
“It is for freedom that Christ has set us free. Stand firm, then, and do not let yourselves be burdened again by a yoke of slavery.” (Galatians 5:1)
