How do you find the balance between having a personal relationship with God and living within a Christian community — the church?
Too often the church is spoken of with dissatisfaction and disappointment because of hypocrisy, legalism and judgement. Bonhoeffer reminds us that despite its warts and imperfections, Christian community is a beautiful gift of God’s grace. Communal life is not an ideal, but a divine reality. It is the physical presence of other Christians and the “roses and lilies” of the Christian life. Only in the community can we help one another and thus minister in the church. Only in community can you be a great help to your brothers and sisters.
