Children see, hear, experience and react to war in different ways. They do not have the skills, knowledge or life experience to make sense of the trauma they have experienced. They cannot fully understand what has happened, they have no idea how to begin to analyze the experience, and they may not even realize that they have been traumatized. Children need adult help and nurturing in exploring their initial traumatic reactions and re-enacting traumatic experiences at each subsequent stage of their development.

Helping “children of war” heal from trauma is still a fairly new field. This book is intended to prepare you to provide safe care to children, particularly in areas where there is a lack of professional psychologists, counsellors, and psychiatrists, and in countries where parents or guardians of traumatized children do not have much trust such professionals.
