Children see, hear, experience, and react to war different than adults. They do not have the skills, knowledge or life experience to process trauma. They cannot fully understand what has happened, have no idea how to begin processing their experiences and may not even be fully aware that they have experienced trauma.

Children need the help of caring adults to navigate their initial traumatic responses and to reprocess the traumatic experiences in each of their subsequent developmental stages. Ministering to children of war is a commitment lasting many years.

Helping children of war heal from trauma is still a relatively new field. This book is to prepare you to safely assist children – particularly in geographic areas underserved by professional therapists, psychologists and psychiatrists – as well as in cultures where those fields are not trusted by the parents or caregivers of the impacted children.
