“How to dine with Jesus?” In “Come to the Table” John Mark Hicks attempts to answer this question by examining the biblical teaching on the Lord’s supper and reevaluating traditional forms and current practices of Christians in regard to this subject. He observes that the silent, solemn, individualistic eating of bread and drinking of wine is radically different from the joyous communal meal in early Christianity and that the contemporary practice needs to be “revisioned” according to biblical values. John Mark combines careful Bible study with gentle, practical suggestions to provide a resource for enriching and renewing a central practice of Christian faith.
John Mark Hicks is a professor of theology at Lipscomb University, Nashville, Tennessee. He holds a Ph.D. in Reformation and Post-Reformation History from Westminster Theological Seminary. His most recent books are Yet Will I Trust Him and a commentary on 1 & 2 Chronicles.
